Training Group Etiquette Checklist

Published in BUILDING A RETRIEVER — Drills & More

Carol F. Cassity

Remember when working with your Training Group:

1.        Stay positive. Every dog has an off day. So does every human.

2.       Have a plan for what you would like to accomplish on the training day.

3.       In general, work 1 or 2 dogs only. This does not apply if it is the landowner.

4.       Be prepared to throw again and again for your training partners. They should be prepared to do the same for you.

5.        Offer to chip in for poppers, birds, primers, etc., if you are unable to provide your own.

6.       Be on time.

7.        Ask questions but don’t argue. Nobody will deliberately give advice that will mess your dog up. If you are not comfortable with what the lead trainer is telling you, don’t do it. It’s your dog – just don’t argue with someone who is trying to help.

8.       Don’t hog the line time. Work a couple of things and then move on.

9.       Give directions to your gunners before you run. Use landmarks if possible and have them point out angle of the throw before they throw.

10.     Know your dog and his limits. Just because your training group is doing a triple that doesn’t mean you can’t do singles. Train your dog at his level, not the groups.

11.      Be ready to throw and not run if your training buddy has an upcoming test and you don’t.

12.     Don’t get mad about poor throws. Everyone makes them and nobody does it on purpose.

13.     Do your homework. Work on recalls at home and other basics alone. Save group training time for things you can’t do by yourself.

14.     If you can’t stay and throw for everyone: don’t come. Running your dog and then leaving is the ultimate in rudeness.

15.     Pick up after yourself. Leave the training grounds cleaner than you found them

Hello Everyone,

It comes with a heavy heart to inform you that Central Michigan HRC will continue to be a club on a single year contingency that if we do not have a change in membership involvement the club will be dissolved in 2018.

With this years meeting being the lowest turnout in quite a while (10 members), there has been a lack in effort of members to have interest in stepping up to take leadership roles in the club. With elections commencing again this year due to officers needing to step down, there was a lack in interesting for anyone to run for a position. None of us want this club to fail, however with a majority of the work falling on the same individuals over time, it is becoming difficult to keep a healthy, functioning club.

With the unfortunately formalities out of the way, here is a summary of what decision commenced at the meeting.
Election:
Randy Mccomas – President
Scott Fourne – Vice President
Shawn Getty – Treasurer
Roylene Blackman – Secretary
Training Coordinator – TBD (no volunteers)

Hunt Test 2017:
  • Hunt test will be run in conjunction with Michigan HRC. We are asking member from both clubs will help with both hunt tests if able.
  • Friday, May 27th Setup tennative start at 4PM
  • Sunday May 29th Central Michigan HRC Hunt Test
  • Saturday May 28th Michigan HRC Hunt Test
  • We will be using Kevin Irish’s property in Howell again this year
Saginaw Bay Waterfowl Festival:
August 5th and 6th
Plan for demos and helping run the fun hunt

Training Schedule for 2017:
TBD

Sincerely,
Central Michigan HRC Officers

Hello Everyone,

We hope everyone and their families are doing well. Another hunting season has come and gone. With the start of a new year we begin to starting thinking about training and hunt test for the upcoming year. To prepare for this season we will be holding our annual club planning meeting on Saturday February 11th at 11am. Mike and Betty Boufford are once again generous enough to offer their house for our meeting.

Howell, MI 48855
Unfortunately, due to changes that have occured over the course of the past year we will be holding elections for all positions of the club. Positions available are President, vice president, treasurer, secretary and training coordinator. As of January 1st 2017 Larry has stepped down as President of the club. We would like to thank Larry and his family for their service to the club. Likewise, many of the other club’s leadership have had changes over the year resulting in a need for re-elections after 1 year. We will also planning details for this year’s upcoming field trial. We request that all members please plan to attend to help in elections and event planning. If you wish to run for a position and cannot attend the meeting please send us a personal message so we can include your name.
Lastly, with the start of the new year the annual membership dues of $25 are due. We will be collecting dues at the meeting, you can mail them to Shawn Getty (current treasurer), or new to this year we can accept paypal payments (centralmichiganhrc@gmail.com) .

What a great weekend we had!! Ran lots of dogs in the fun hunt. We met a lot of new people interested in learning how to train their dogs, so hopefully we will gain a few new members for the club after all he people we talked too!!

Also we made the newspaper with Josh Larsen and his pup Manistee being the main subject. What awesome exposure for our club!!  Take a look at the article!!

WOW!!!!

What an amazing weekend this was. It was busy and sometimes overwhelming, but all in all it was GREAT!! We got to meet a lot of new people, saw good dog work, lots of ribbons, titles and even (2) two 500 point dogs. Met Melissa from Duck Dog, what an amazing young lady she is, down to earth and loves what she does!! We had a pig roast that it seems everybody enjoyed. Had a great raffle and lots of good conversation, laughs and smiles.

I want to send out thanks to each and every person that helped make our test such a huge success!!!!2227 2228 2229 2230 2231 2232 2233 2234 2235 2236 2237 2238 2239 2240 2241 2242 2243 2244 2245 2246 2247 2248 2249 2250 2251 2252 2253 2254 2255 2256 2257 2258 2259 2260 2261 2262 2263 2264 2265 2266 2267 2268 2269 2270 2271 2272 2273 2274 2275 2276 2277 2278 2279 2280 2281 2282 2283 2284 2285 2286 2287 2288 2289 2290 2291 2292 2293 2294 2295 2296 2297 2298 2299 2300 2301 2302 2303 Our Club workers
